SAE (Substance Abuse Expert) Evaluation
Purpose:
To determine the extent of an individual's substance use or abuse.
To evaluate how substance use is affecting their personal, social, and occupational functioning.
To provide recommendations for treatment based on initial assessment and monitoring progress throughout treatment.
Develop a return-to-work plan that is catered towards reintegration into safety sensitive workplace environments through a fitness for duty evaluation.
Components:
Personal History: Detailed questions about the individual's substance use history, including frequency, quantity, and types of substances used.
Impact Assessment: Evaluation of how substance use affects various aspects of the individual’s life, including work, relationships, and health.
Behavioral Observations: Assessing signs and symptoms of substance abuse and related behaviors.
Diagnostic Criteria: Often using established criteria (e.g., DSM-5) to diagnose substance use disorders.
Context:
Often used in legal situations, employment settings, or by healthcare providers to understand the extent of substance abuse and to develop a treatment plan.
An SAE (Substance Abuse Expert) assessment and an SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) assessment are both used in the context of managing substance abuse, particularly in work environments where safety is a significant concern. The role of the psychologist conducting these assessments are to act in the best interest of public. These assessments play a key role in helping employees and companies address situations in which there has been a violation of company policy.
SAP (Substance Abuse Professional) Assessment
An SAP assessment is specifically designed for individuals who are required to undergo an evaluation due to work-related issues related to substance abuse, particularly under regulations like those from the Department of Transportation (DOT).
Purpose:
To assess the individual’s substance use issues and determine their fitness for returning to safety-sensitive duties.
To provide recommendations for treatment and monitoring progress throughout treatment
Components:
Comprehensive Evaluation: Includes a detailed assessment of the individual's substance use history and current status.
Treatment Recommendations: Developing a tailored treatment plan to address substance abuse and monitoring treatment progress/compliance.
Follow-Up: Establishing a process for follow-up evaluations to ensure compliance with the treatment plan and readiness to return to work.
Context:
Primarily used in the workplace, especially for employees in safety-sensitive positions who have violated substance abuse policies and are seeking to return to work. SAPs are especially relevant in regulated industries, like transportation, where there are strict requirements for managing substance abuse.
